“Por Qué Te Vas” might be singer Jeanette’s biggest hit and one of Perales’s most iconic compositions. But why did this song cause discord between the two? This is the story.
“Por Qué Te Vas” is a well-known romantic song composed by José Luis Perales in 1973 during a rainy afternoon at his country house, which inspired him to compose special melodies. As was his original goal, the song was perfect for the soft and delicate voice of English singer Jeanette, who at the time was one of the most successful musical performers in Europe and Latin America.
However, the song didn’t become known until a year later, thanks to its soundtrack for one of the most popular films of the time, “Cría Cuervos.” The legend of this hit song was recounted in detail by the Spanish singer-songwriter himself on the Mexican television program “Conversando con Cristina Pacheco” on July 27, 2012.
“When no one important had recorded any of my songs, I dreamed that a singer like Jeanette (who was number one at the time) would record a song I had written with her in mind, titled “Por Qué Te Vas” (Why Are You Going?). That same rainy afternoon, I also composed another song called “Escucha” (Listen). Both with the same intention. But that was simply a dream,” Perales clarified.
«Years went by, and one day Jeanette appeared. I gave the song to a record company through some musician friends, and then Ella’s producer, who was now also mine, offered her the song. He told her they would include it on their next album, and Ella said, “I’m not going to record a song by an unknown author.” The producer clarified that he wasn’t that unknown, but he still had a lot of future and the song was very good. This man practically forced her to record “Por Qué Te Vas,” and Ella flew into a rage: she had a crisis with the company because they forced her to sing a song by a guy named Perales, who wasn’t yet established. So she didn’t promote it. The song was released practically overnight for a year,” she added.
However, the success of this song was destined. “One day, film director Carlos Aura called me because they wanted to include the song in the movie ‘Cría Cuervos’. The album came out, and everywhere the film premiered, the song became number one, selling millions of records from then until today. And Jeanette one day said to me, ‘Oh, thank you, José Luis. You’ve written the most important song of my life.’ And I said, ‘You took a while, eh? You’re going to record it for a long time.’ She apologized for that, and we’re now very good friends,” José Luis explained on the television program.
Jeanette’s version
Jeanette spoke about the issue in 2022 with Memorias TV, asserting that the entire story of her reaction to “Por Qué Te Vas” is simply a showbiz myth and untrue. “That story that I didn’t want to record is false. I really liked the song from the first moment,” the artist clarified. “I think it’s more a matter of envy and gossip because the song was an absolute hit. Fortunately, I was able to clarify the matter with José Luis and tell him the truth about how things happened,” the singer of “Soy Rebelde” and other great compositions by Manuel Alejandro, also explained.
