By 1993, Neil Young had written a sequel to his 1972 album Harvest.<\/em> Some similarities between both albums were there. Guest musicians who appeared on Harvest<\/em>, resurfaced on Harvest Moon<\/em>, including James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt. Moving from the conversation of a young man talking to his elder on Harvest<\/em> classic \u201cOld Man,\u201d Young sang about his hound dog named Elvis, who spent several years on the road with him on the similarly titled Harvest Moon <\/em>track, \u201cOld King.\u201d

Like Harvest,<\/em> which went to No. 1 in the U.S., Harvest Moon <\/em>was another success for Young. It reached No. 16 on the Billboard <\/em>200 and went Gold and Platinum in 1993, and multi-platinum by 1997.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Moon and the Meaning<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the title track, featuring Ronstadt, Young returns to his recurring motif of the moon or the moonlight, which has appeared in more than two dozen of his songs, including \u201cAfter the Goldrush\u201d\u2014I was lyin\u2019 in a burned out basement with the full moon in my eyes<\/em>\u2014along with \u201cCinnamon Girl,\u201d \u201cSweet Joni,\u201d \u201cBerlin,\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t Let It Bring You Down,\u201d among many others.

\u201cI respect people who are dedicated to organized religion, and I respect their way of life, but it\u2019s not mine,\u201d said Young of his spiritual connection to nature, and the moon. \u201cMy faith has always been there, it\u2019s just not organized, there\u2019s no doctrine. There\u2019s no book I follow.\u201d

He added, \u201cTo me, the forest is my church. If I need to think I\u2019ll go for a walk in the trees, or I\u2019ll go for a walk on the prairie, or I\u2019ll go for a walk on the beach. Wherever the environment is most extreme is where I will go. If there\u2019s a moon, I\u2019ll try to get out and walk under the moon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much like its predecessor \u201cHarvest,\u201d \u201cHarvest Moon\u201d circles back to love but it\u2019s not as perilous as the first, more hesitant nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where Young sang about someone who didn\u2019t know how to \u201charvest\u201d love, in his 1972 song \u201cHarvest Moon\u201d has rest assured. It follows a more celebratory night shared between two lovers dancing\u2014under the full moon, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pegi<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also presumed that Young may have written \u201cHarvest Moon\u201d about his second wife, Pegi, whom he was married to from 1978 to 2014. \u201cHarvest Moon\u201d could have been a recollection of their earlier, more carefree days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
