T Bone Burnett<\/strong> (born January 14, 1948, St. Louis, Missouri<\/a>, U.S.) is an American producer and musician, one of popular music\u2019s<\/a> most prolific<\/a> and successful producers, known for his work in a wide range of genres<\/a> including rock, country, and folk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Burnett spent his childhood in\u00a0Fort Worth<\/a>, Texas, and it was there that he acquired the nickname \u201cT Bone\u201d and became involved in the local\u00a0music<\/a>\u00a0scene, initially as a guitarist with local\u00a0blues<\/a>\u00a0bands and later as the founder of his own recording studio. He moved to Los Angeles in the early 1970s and recorded his debut solo album,\u00a0The B-52 Band & the Fabulous Skylarks<\/em>\u00a0(1972), a straightforward collection of bluesy rock tunes. In 1975 he received his major break into the industry, touring as a guitarist on\u00a0Bob Dylan<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0Rolling Thunder Revue<\/a>\u00a0tour. His second solo album,\u00a0Truth Decay<\/em>\u00a0(1980), shows Burnett\u2019s maturation as an artist, but he found greater success in the production booth than he did as a performer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1984 Burnett produced the critically acclaimed major-label debut<\/a> from Los Lobos, How Will the Wolf Survive?<\/em>, and soon after he worked with Elvis Costello<\/a>, whose King of America<\/a><\/em> (1986) and Spike<\/a><\/em> (1989) feature Burnett as both producer and performer. While these and other projects helped to establish Burnett professionally, his work on The Turning<\/em> (1987), an album by Christian pop artist Leslie Phillips, proved significant personally. Burnett and Phillips\u2014who recorded as Sam on later albums\u2014became involved romantically, and the two were married in 1989 (they divorced in 2004).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou know, Ronnie Hawkins used to say, \u2018If this show business thing doesn\u2019t work out, by the time I\u2019m 80, I\u2019m gonna look for another line of work\u2019,\u201d said T Bone Burnett<\/a>, getting chatty with an audience in the back room at McCabe\u2019s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, where he was doing a multi-night stand. Burnett seemed happy to have a legendary rock figure to quote with as sardonic a sense of humor as his own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd I was thinking about that,\u201d he continued, \u201cbecause it might not work out for me. I\u2019m getting close to 80 [he\u2019s actually 78], and I thought, \u2018You know what I\u2019d be great at, is being an influencer.\u2019 Don\u2019t you think? Like, I\u2019m gonna influence the\u00a0fuck<\/em>\u00a0out of you tonight,\u201d he promised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
