Sarah McLachlan\u00a0<\/strong>(born January 28, 1968,\u00a0Halifax<\/a>,\u00a0Nova Scotia<\/a>, Canada) is a Canadian singer and songwriter known for her introspective\u00a0music<\/a>. She cofounded (1997) and headlined Lilith Fair, a groundbreaking concert tour featuring female performers almost exclusively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early life and first albums<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

McLachlan received classical training in guitar<\/a>, piano<\/a>, and voice. Rebelling against a conservative<\/a> upbringing, she focused her musical talents on the popular punk<\/a> and new-wave<\/a> music movements of the 1980s. She was discovered by an executive at a Canadian record label when she was 17 and the lead singer of the October Game. After two years at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, McLachlan moved to Vancouver<\/a>, signed a recording contract, and released her debut album, Touch<\/em>, in 1988. The critically acclaimed recording was followed by such other albums as Solace<\/em> (1991), Fumbling Towards Ecstasy<\/em> (1993), and The Freedom Sessions<\/em> (1995), all of which showcased McLachlan\u2019s talents as a singer, guitarist, and songwriter. Her fans were immediately drawn to her vocal range and the intense emotion that came to define her music<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surfacing<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It yielded<\/a> two of her biggest hits, \u201cAdia\u201d and \u201cAngel,\u201d both of which reached the top five on the Billboard<\/em><\/a> singles chart. The candidness of such songs as \u201cSweet Surrender\u201d and \u201cBuilding a Mystery\u201d earned McLachlan Grammy Awards<\/a> for best female pop vocal performance and best pop instrumental. She also received Juno (Canadian Music) Awards for best album, best female vocalist, single of the year, and songwriter of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s been your most cathartic song to write?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s so many for different times, but I think if there was one song that consistently feeds me over the years it would be \u201cAngel,\u201d because it\u2019s struck such an emotional chord with people, and has been a companion to them in so many different tough situations. It\u2019s just the most beautiful validation for me as an artist to think that something I had a hand in creating is out there in the world helping people through a really tough time. It\u2019s like giving someone a hug without knowing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
