She cofounded (1997) and headlined Lilith Fair, a groundbreaking concert tour featuring female performers almost exclusively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Early life and first albums<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>McLachlan received classical training in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/guitar\">guitar<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/piano\">piano<\/a>, and voice. Rebelling against a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/conservative\">conservative<\/a>&nbsp;upbringing, she focused her musical talents on the popular&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/punk\">punk<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/new-wave-music\">new-wave<\/a>&nbsp;music movements of the 1980s. She was discovered by an executive at a Canadian record label when she was 17 and the lead singer of the October Game. After two years at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, McLachlan moved to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Vancouver\">Vancouver<\/a>, signed a recording contract, and released her debut album,&nbsp;<em>Touch<\/em>, in 1988. The critically acclaimed recording was followed by such other albums as&nbsp;<em>Solace<\/em>&nbsp;(1991),&nbsp;<em>Fumbling Towards Ecstasy<\/em>&nbsp;(1993), and&nbsp;<em>The Freedom Sessions<\/em>&nbsp;(1995), all of which showcased McLachlan\u2019s talents as a singer, guitarist, and songwriter. It&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/dictionary\/yielded\">yielded<\/a>&nbsp;two of her biggest hits, \u201cAdia\u201d and \u201cAngel,\u201d both of which reached the top five on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Billboard-magazine\"><em>Billboard<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;singles chart. The candidness of such songs as \u201cSweet Surrender\u201d and \u201cBuilding a Mystery\u201d earned McLachlan&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/Grammy-Award\">Grammy Awards<\/a>&nbsp;for best female pop vocal performance and best pop instrumental. It\u2019s just the most beautiful validation for me as an artist to think that something I had a hand in creating is out there in the world helping people through a really tough time.
