Steve Miller Band released \u201cThe Joker\u201d in October 1973. It topped the Billboard<\/em> Hot 100 in January 1976. The song received heavy airplay in the United Kingdom upon its initial release. However, it didn\u2019t become a hit there. In fact, their only appearance on the UK chart came in 1976 with \u201cRock\u2019n Me,\u201d which peaked at No. 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Udiscover Music<\/a><\/em>, \u201cThe Joker\u201d wasn\u2019t the first song to get a boost from a Levi\u2019s commercial. Marvin Gaye\u2019s \u201cI Heard It Through the Grapevine\u201d and Percy Sledge\u2019s \u201cWhen a Man Loves a Woman\u201d were among the soul staples that found new life after featuring in an ad for the brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ad didn\u2019t just give the Steve Miller Band a hit in the United Kingdom. It also went to No. 1 in New Zealand, the Netherlands, and Ireland. Additionally, it was a top 10 hit in Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Belgium, and Austria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miller thought \u201cThe Joker\u201d was \u201cjust a song\u201d when he recorded it. \u201cI didn\u2019t think it was a hit single or anything,\u201d he s<\/a>aid. At the time, he was more concerned with his label making sure they put his albums in stores in the cities he was going to hit on tour. After playing across the country, he returned to California. \u201cI was listening to the radio, and \u2018The Joker\u2019 was on four of the five radio stations at the same time. I was upset because it wasn\u2019t on all five,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
