A-ha were one of the most successful groups of the \u201980s, but as singer Morten Harket once stated: \u201cWe were reluctant pop stars \u2013 virtually from day one.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking in 2009, when the Norwegian trio\u2019s album Foot Of The Mountain was released, Harket explained: \u201cIn the \u201880s it was like we were run over by this massive train. We were not there to be pin-up idols. We knew that was part of it, but it was not the reason for doing what we were doing.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe media was crazy, and that was one of the main reasons why we quit for some years, because we just had enough of it. We just wanted to make music.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The artistry behind A-ha\u2019s success was neatly summarised by the group\u2019s other two members \u2013 keyboard player and Magne Furuholmen and guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furuholmen said of A-ha\u2019s signature sound: \u201cThe key elements that first defined the band are soaring vocals, synth hooks, yearning lyrics and melodic melancholia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: \u201cMorten has an incredible voice \u2013 one of the very few instantly recognisable voices in pop music. And that voice is most effective in a synth-based musical landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waaktaar-Savoy, the group\u2019s principal songwriter, said of his creative process: \u201cWriting is for me is the hardest part but also the most enjoyable. You might spend months searching for that missing verse or the title that you think defines a song. But when it comes together, there\u2019s no other feeling like it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
