Going into the premiere episode of\u00a0True Detective<\/em>\u00a0season two, we knew the answers to almost all of the show\u2019s most basic, production-based mysteries: who\u2019d star, who\u2019d direct, and where the season would be set. But there was still one crucial piece of the puzzle missing: Who would sing the theme song? As we learned tonight, the answer to that question turned out to be pretty awesome: none other than Leonard Cohen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yep, that sparse, gravelly, and altogether badass song you heard over the opening credits was \u201cNevermind<\/a>,\u201d a track off Cohen\u2019s most recent studio album, 2014\u2019s\u00a0Popular Problems<\/em>. As we know from last season, when music supervisor T Bone Burnett chose the Handsome Family\u2019s dark, slinky \u201cFar From Any Road\u201d as the theme song,\u00a0True Detective\u00a0<\/em>isthe kind of show that puts a lot of stock in its opening credits \u2014 they set the show\u2019s all-important tone. Judging from last night\u2019s episode, the mood of season two is even bleaker than its nihilistic-but-campy predecessor, and \u201cNevermind\u201d \u2014 a laconic, husky-throated dirge that hangs over the opening credits like a heavy fog \u2014 was our first indication of that fact. Cohen\u2019s low, weathered voice booms like an Old Testament God played by John Wayne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cohen began his career as a poet before he ever took a stab at writing songs, and \u201cNevermind\u201d began its life as a\u00a0poem<\/a>. He first published it in 2005 on the\u00a0Leonard Cohen Files<\/a>, a fan site on which he sometimes posts works in progress or previously unreleased material. A year later, \u201cNever Mind\u201d (the poem title is two words, the song title is one, and Cohen is the sort of writer who is so jazzed about the tiny nuances of language that this does make a difference) was published in his long-awaited poetry collection,\u00a0Book of Longing<\/em>, his first in more than 30 years. No matter the form of what he\u2019s working on, Cohen is a notoriously slow writer, sometimes laboring over a piece for as long as a decade. He once told an interviewer that his writing process is \u201clike a bear stumbling into a beehive or a honey cache: I\u2019m stumbling right into it and getting stuck, and it\u2019s delicious and horrible and I\u2019m in it and it\u2019s not very graceful and it\u2019s very awkward and it\u2019s very painful and yet there\u2019s something inevitable about it.\u201d Put another way, see\u00a0Popular Problems\u2019\u00a0<\/em>great manifesto of an opening track,\u00a0\u201cSlow\u201d<\/a>: \u201cI\u2019m slowing down the tune\/ I\u2019ve never liked it fast\/ You wanna get there soon\/ I wanna get there last.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
