Who, or what, is The Durutti Column,<\/strong> I hear you ask?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story starts in Manchester in 1978, when guitarist Vini Reilly<\/strong> was doing what every young punk with an attitude was doing\u2026forming a band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually The Durutti Column<\/strong> came into existence, and thanks to the keen ear of one Tony Wilson<\/strong>, they were among the first acts to be signed to Factory Records. In fact, they were one of four nascent acts to be featured on the very first Factory release\u2026the 4-sided E.P., A Facory Sample<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong>, alongside Cabaret Voltaire, John Dowie<\/strong> and Joy Division.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not bad company to keep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But The Durutti Column <\/strong>Mach 1 promptly split up before they could record their debut album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so, The Durutti Column<\/strong> became essentially the Vini Reilly<\/strong> project and the first album, The Return Of The Durutti Project<\/em><\/strong><\/em><\/strong>, was finally released in 1980.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Produced by Martin Hannett,<\/strong> it sounded nothing like the previous version of the band\u2026or anything else that was was being made in that time, save for maybe Brian Eno\u2019s<\/strong> Ambient music.
