Joy Crookes<\/a> is the soulful songstress who\u2019s made a name for herself in London\u2019s neo-soul scene, earning nominations for the BRIT Awards, Mercury Prize, and BBC Sound Awards. This summer, she made another appearance at the historic Glastonbury festival, further proving she is an artist to watch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her latest single, \u201cSomebody To You,\u201d is a 50s-style soul ballad created in collaboration with her longtime collaborator, Harvey Grant. Adding to its charm, the track also features vocals from singer Sam Fender, whom she met at the Mercury Prize Awards..<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re in every photo on my teenage bedroom wall, though you\u2019re not even famous, i\u2019m your biggest fan of all, Putting you first, i paid the price pedestal, I put you up way too high, w<\/em>ho am I when I\u2019m out of your sight?, i wanna see how we look apart.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moving into the chorus, she sings about the push and pull of a relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCause I spent seven hours tangled up in your arms, being somebody to you, y<\/em>ou keep pulling petals off the flowers, keeping hands on the love that you\u2019ve been scared to lose, don\u2019t worry about me, i\u2019ll be fine, if you wanna get me back tomorrow, gotta let go tonight, oh, you gotta let go tonight.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearing the end of the single, she sings about wanting some distance in the relationship\u2014not because she doesn\u2019t love them, but because she wants the freedom to be herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe less I need you, the more I see you, as a mortal man without me holding you up, show me the world, then you close the curtain, brought me up on conditional love, stuck in your orbit, it\u2019s dizzying,\u00a0I wanna know me without your influence, lose your hold, not your baby no more, but that doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019m losing love.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement about the new single, Crookes explained that it was meant to portray a complex relationship dynamic she had experienced before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2018Somebody to You\u2019 is a song that I wrote when questioning the reliance I had on someone I\u2019m very close with and their reliance on me \u2013 and whether that needed to change in order for me to understand myself better,\u201d she shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
