The archive series currently being spearheaded by Joni Mitchell<\/a> is a dream come true for diehard fans. Hours long and filled to the brim with live tracks, studio outtakes, and unheard material, the series saw its first release in 2020 with Joni Mitchell Archives \u2013 Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963\u20131967)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fellow folkies Bob Dylan and Neil Young have been releasing material from their respective archives for years, and Mitchell has a treasure trove all her own to explore. If you want to hear Mitchell take on \u2018House of the Rising Sun\u2019, or hear some of the first live performances of classic tracks like \u2018Both Sides Now\u2019 and \u2018The Circle Game\u2019, there\u2019s only one place to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second edition of the archive series, Joni Mitchell Archives \u2013 Vol. 2: The Reprise Years (1968\u20131971)<\/em>, covers what can only be described as a star in the making. There are funky hippie tracks, like Mitchell\u2019s take on The Youngblood\u2019s \u201cpeace and love\u201d anthem \u2018Get Together\u2019, early takes on soon-to-be signature songs like \u2018Woodstock\u2019 and \u2018Urge for Going\u2019, and even a live set recorded by the one and only Jimi Hendrix<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Easily one of the most exciting finds is a duet between Mitchell and James Taylor at the Paris Theatre in London in late October, 1970. The two sing \u2018You Can Close Your Eyes\u2019 for the BBC\u2019s\u00a0In Concert\u00a0<\/em>programme, a song that would later find its way onto Taylor\u2019s\u00a0Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon\u00a0<\/em>album a year later. Mitchell and Taylor\u2019s relationship would\u00a0inspire quite a bit of material on Mitchell\u2019s end<\/a>, including parts of albums like\u00a0Blue\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0For the Roses<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
