This is a story about Sin\u00e9ad O\u2019Connor\u2019s \u201cNothing Compares 2 U.\u201d Prince wrote it. She took it. It\u2019s her song. But it cost her dearly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


Prince, as you are probably aware, wrote a shit ton of songs. And gave a shit ton away. And it transpires that some of those songs just sound better when sung by a woman. The Bangles doing \u201cManic Monday.\u201d Chaka Khan doing \u201cI Feel for You.\u201d Sheila E. doing \u201cThe Glamorous Life.\u201d You want the truth? Cyndi Lauper\u2019s version of \u201cWhen U Were Mine\u201d is better than Prince\u2019s version of \u201cWhen You Were Mine.\u201d That\u2019s right. What are you gonna do about it? I\u2019m not on Twitter (as far as you know, probably). You don\u2019t know where to find me. It\u2019s not that Cyndi Lauper changed the meaning of this song, it\u2019s that Cyndi Lauper distilled the pure exquisite flamboyant misery of this song.https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Q53oZpyxZ-8?rel=0&%3Bstart=140&start=140<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Sin\u00e9ad O\u2019Connor doing \u201cNothing Compares 2 U\u201d on her second album, 1990\u2019s I Do Not Want What I Haven\u2019t Got<\/em>\u2014this is different. However cordial the initial business transaction here\u2014the process by which Prince allowed her to record and release his song\u2014forget all that. This is a hostile takeover. Sin\u00e9ad embodies this song on a molecular level. She changes the fundamental meaning of this song. She owns this song. She steals this song. Just the audacity of that. The greatness and the fearlessness required of her to do that. Sin\u00e9ad O\u2019Connor saying, \u201cI\u2019m gonna steal a song from Prince\u201d is like Nicolas Cage saying, \u201cI\u2019m gonna steal the Declaration of Independence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is this person? What does she want? What doesn\u2019t she want? What do we want from her? In June 2021 Sin\u00e9ad O\u2019Connor published a memoir called Rememberings<\/em>. It\u2019s rough. She was born in Glenageary, Ireland, in 1966. The third of four children. Her parents split up when she was 9; she split time between her father, who was initially granted custody of the children, and her mother, who in Sin\u00e9ad\u2019s account was physically and mentally abusive. Sin\u00e9ad mentions a few times that when she\u2019d come home from school for the summer she\u2019d pretend she\u2019d lost her field hockey stick, because she didn\u2019t want her mother to beat her with it. She says her mother would beat her with a carpet-sweeper pole instead and make Sin\u00e9ad say \u201cI am nothing\u201d over and over. That\u2019s it for details. Her mother died in a car accident when Sin\u00e9ad was 18, shortly before she got her first record deal. I tell you that much only because this might somewhat explain both the fragility and the ferocity with which Sin\u00e9ad O\u2019Connor sings, and the hard-fought self-assurance she brings to every song she\u2019s ever sung.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pop-star-memoir arc, generally\u2014the Rise and Fall narrative you know and love from any Oscar-nominated biopic or tawdry VH1\u00a0Behind the Music\u00a0<\/em>episode you\u2019ve ever watched\u2014at least there\u2019s a\u00a0rise<\/em>, right? At least there\u2019s a brief period when the pop\u2019s star discovery, and breakthrough success, and apex fame and fortune are\u00a0enjoyed<\/em>\u00a0by the pop star.\u00a0Over-<\/em>enjoyed, inevitably. But enjoyed. But Sin\u00e9ad\u2019s book is rough going in this respect as well. She writes that she was sitting on the toilet\u2014she wants you to know that she can\u2019t remember whose toilet\u2014when she is informed that both \u201cNothing Compares 2 U\u201d and\u00a0I Do Not Want What I Haven\u2019t Got\u00a0<\/em>have both hit no. 1 in America, on the singles and albums charts respectively. She writes, \u201cWhoever it was who told me got cross with me because I didn\u2019t take the news happily. Instead, I cried like a child at the gates of hell.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
