Carla Morrison stepped away from the spotlight in 2018, 15 years after the Mexican singer-songwriter started performing with her first band, Babaluca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She had had enough of the persistent criticisms that came with fame. Strangers made cruel comments about her body, tattoos, lyrics, talent and musical style. When she performed, people would boo and flip her off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI felt unwanted, like people didn\u2019t want me to exist, and I felt like, \u2018They\u2019re right. I shouldn\u2019t,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She started having suicidal thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey broke mi persona,<\/em> and I didn\u2019t realize it because I was playing strong,\u201d she said. \u201cI was trying to give this narrative of \u2018Yo s\u00ed soy fuerte <\/em>[I am strong],\u2019 but it was hurting me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n And although she knew many people supported her work, the negative voices grew louder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMe sient\u00ed muy infeliz <\/em>[I felt very unhappy],\u201d Morrison said through tears during an interview at her Los Angeles-area home in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So she got a student visa to study music in Paris \u2014 and moved to a place where nobody knew who she was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Morrison has been a singer and composer since she was about 20 years old. She\u2019s released three studio albums, has two Grammy nominations and three Latin Grammy Awards. She\u2019s best known for her romantic songs that include \u201cEres T\u00fa<\/a>\u201d and \u201cCompartir<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
