Joy Crookes is the soulful songstress who’s made a name for herself in London’s neo-soul scene, earning nominations for the BRIT Awards, Mercury Prize, and BBC Sound Awards. This summer, she made another appearance at the historic Glastonbury festival, further proving she is an artist to watch.
Her latest single, “Somebody To You,” is a 50s-style soul ballad created in collaboration with her longtime collaborator, Harvey Grant. Adding to its charm, the track also features vocals from singer Sam Fender, whom she met at the Mercury Prize Awards..
“You’re in every photo on my teenage bedroom wall, though you’re not even famous, i’m your biggest fan of all, Putting you first, i paid the price pedestal, I put you up way too high, who am I when I’m out of your sight?, i wanna see how we look apart.”
Moving into the chorus, she sings about the push and pull of a relationship.
“Cause I spent seven hours tangled up in your arms, being somebody to you, you keep pulling petals off the flowers, keeping hands on the love that you’ve been scared to lose, don’t worry about me, i’ll be fine, if you wanna get me back tomorrow, gotta let go tonight, oh, you gotta let go tonight.”
Nearing the end of the single, she sings about wanting some distance in the relationship—not because she doesn’t love them, but because she wants the freedom to be herself.
“The less I need you, the more I see you, as a mortal man without me holding you up, show me the world, then you close the curtain, brought me up on conditional love, stuck in your orbit, it’s dizzying, I wanna know me without your influence, lose your hold, not your baby no more, but that doesn’t mean I’m losing love.”
In a statement about the new single, Crookes explained that it was meant to portray a complex relationship dynamic she had experienced before.
“‘Somebody to You’ is a song that I wrote when questioning the reliance I had on someone I’m very close with and their reliance on me – and whether that needed to change in order for me to understand myself better,” she shared.
